My Canine Awareness Programme is a process consisting of a number of sessions spread out over a period of weeks or months. The number of sessions is usually 4 but can vary depending upon the needs of the individual. All work is on a one to one basis. I travel to you so that we can work in a familiar environment for your dog and gain a fuller understanding of any influential factors.
The foundation principles of my programme are Safety and Trust. These are essential foundations for any positive learning environment and without them there cannot help but be an underlying sense of vulnerability or insecurity.
Animals cannot verbalise how they are feeling
Animals cannot verbalise how they are feeling and their only means of expression is through their behaviour and their emotional reactions. Signs that your dog may not be happy with a situation can be quite subtle and easy to miss. Sometimes they can be misunderstood and labelled as ‘dominance’ or ‘stubbornness’. Often the only course of action for the dog is to escalate the behaviour and it is usually at this point that we recognise that there is something wrong but don’t know how to resolve it.
No problematic behaviour is the result of just one thing, there will always be contributory factors which exacerbate or alleviate it. We are the primary sources of food, shelter and emotional support for our dogs and as such our influence cannot be overestimated.
The canine behaviour programme enables us to work together and explore specific areas of your dog’s life to discover the underlying causes that are contributing to the problem and I will introduce ways in which you can address these to create a more positively balanced life for you both.
